Evaluations

2025 Fastball St. Albert Player Evaluations (U11,U13)

This year we have combined U11 Advanced (formerly ‘A’) and U13 Competitive (formerly ‘A’/’B’) tryouts to allow additional date options for busy athletes.

To accommodate our large numbers on short notice, our initial evaluations will take place at the Turf Training Center 4 1030 34th Ave, Nisku.

All additional tryouts, including Pitching and Catching will be held at the AngelDome, 12946 148 Street NW, Edmonton.

Players will need to attend one of the sessions below in stage 1 to be considered for a competitive team. At the U11 age group, there is an Advanced level and a Development level. This was implemented by Softball Alberta last season, and in efforts to align with their new model we have adapted our team formations. The number of (equal) Advanced teams made will depend on the number of registrants and results of the evaluation scores.

For U13 we will aim to have 2-4 competitive teams, depending on number of registrants and evaluation scores. Recreational teams will be formed in the Spring. There will be one “A” (White) team, and remaining equal teams (formerly ‘B), with the potential of one “development A” (Blue) team if commitment level and skill is there. This change is partially due to an unofficial announcement from Softball Alberta that they will be moving towards a tiering system. Teams will participate in “tiering rounds” to determine the level of provincials they can enter. Therefore, the need to determine the level of competition for the year initially is not the same as previous years.

Please understand this is all new information and appreciate your patience and understanding with both Fastball St. Albert and Softball Alberta as these changes are implemented.

Notes:

  • U13 and U11 Athletes interested in playing on a competitive team must attend 1 of the 2 Stage I dates. Athletes may be invited back to a second tryout the week following at the Angel Dome at no charge. This will be completed with the selected coach to help finalize their roster.
  • Pitcher and Catcher evaluations will be held at the AngelDome separately
  • Team level and how many teams at each level that will exist will not be determined until evaluations are complete - these decisions are made based on data collected at evaluations. Please refer to FSA's Player Evaluation and Team Selection Policy for more information about team formation.
  • Fastball St Albert is moving away from “A/B” labeling for competitive teams and will be replacing it with colours. Teams will be formed based on evaluation scores and the level of play will be determined in the early season.
  • Any athlete who is not concerned with making a competitive team is not required to attend evaluations; however, attendance is helpful in order to balance teams at the recreational levels. If you prefer not to attend evaluations, please send notification to evaulationdirector@fastballstalbert.ca This will help our resource planning to know in advance!
  • Once the initial evaluations have occurred, coaches will be selected from applications received. (For parent-coached teams, the coach’s athlete must evaluate within the window of athlete selection for the level of play.) Visit FSA's Coach Selection, Expectation and Evaluation Policy for more information about the Coach Selection Process

We aim to have all competitive teams formed by end of December and remaining recreational teams formed by end of March.

*Competitive teams can expect to start practicing in January.

2025 Fastball St. Albert Player Evaluations (U7/U9)

ID camp will be held in March to allow evaluators to make the teams as even as possible.

This will also allow for some fun experience and exposure to the sport for new players.

Registration link will also ask for you to rank your player from 1-3 to help with our team formations.

1 - no experience (has never played catch, swung a bat, minimal to no understanding of the game etc)

2 - minimal experience (plays catch at home, has some understanding of the game)

3 - moderate (or higher) experience (has played before, can throw and catch confidently)
